A goddess for Daphne

Made for the Daphne Festival at St. John’s Waterloo, London to commemorate 5 years since the assassination of the Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

The piece is coil built, layer by layer out of terracotta. It references the prehistoric Goddess statues of Malta - one of the earliest representations of the female form.

Finger marks are left exposed, evoking skin and cellulite. Shards of porcelain inserted into the surface evoke prickly pears, conjuring both pain and protection.

The piece cracked in the high firing bringing the tragedy of Daphne’s death by car bomb to the fore.
